The Sacramento Youth Commission (SYC) mission is to protect, preserve, enhance & advance the quality of life for Sacramento youth by advising the City Council and the public on issues relating to youth policies, programs, & opportunities.

The Sacramento Youth Commission was originally established in 1993 as an advisory body to the Council Committee on Neighborhood and Public Safety, per the request of then council member Steinberg. It originally comprised of 11 members.
In 1994 a resolution was passed to compensate the SYC.
In 1997, the Youth Commission became an advisory body to the full Sacramento City Council and Mayor.
In 2001, under Mayor Heather Fargo the Youth Commission was expanded to 22 members with Powers and Duties, and to have titled officers.
On April 15, 2019 council voted to add ordinance chapter 2.162 to establish the SYC via ordinance
On June 1st 2019, ordinance 2019-0010 codified the establishment of SYC as an advisory body and subjects SYC to the same requirements as other city boards and commissions therefor establishing the Sacramento Youth commission as the official youth voice in the City of Sacramento.
